Enhanced barrier precautions are interventions used in long-term care settings to reduce the risk of transmission of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). Studies have identified the high volume of residents living in long-term care who are colonized or infected with MDROs that pose a risk for morbidity and mortality. This activity reviews enhanced barrier precautions, the differences among standard, contact, and enhanced barrier precautions, and strategies used to provide care to residents on enhanced barrier precautions.
Upon completion, participants should be able to:
- Self-report increased knowledge and skills related to appropriately identifying residents who require enhanced barrier precautions and how to apply the associated strategies to prevent transmission of infection.
- Discuss the key differences among standard precautions, contact precautions and enhanced barrier precautions.
- Identify the residents who require enhanced barrier precautions.
- Implement enhanced barrier precautions to perform high-contact resident activities for appropriate resident populations.
This course is 45 minutes and designed for nurses and other staff working in long-term care settings. Other interested healthcare providers are welcome to participate. CNE and NAB credit may apply.
