Description: The problem of burnout has consequences for healthcare professionals and patients. Studies have shown that the incidence of burnout may be as high as 50% among physicians. Healthcare professionals with significant symptoms of burnout do not enjoy their work, and the personal toll on them is high. In addition, stress and burnout can affect quality of care and patient safety. This live lecture course will help participants discover their own current propensity for burnout. It will analyze burnout from three perspectives: 1) a large healthcare system viewpoint, 2) a specific workplace viewpoint, and 3) an individual provider viewpoint. The program will offer various levels of strategies for reducing burnout, some that are best implemented by large healthcare systems, some appropriate for practices or workplaces, and some best suited to individuals.

It is recommended to take the Burnout Learner Assessment prior to attending. To access the Burnout Learner Assessment, please log in as a LAMMICO Member and proceed to online education.

Description: In 2015 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) issued an extensive report on the nature and prevention of diagnostic error entitled “Improving Diagnosis in Healthcare.” The definition of medical error was changed to include patient communications. The IOM report was consistent with other studies showing the strong association of communications with the most costly of medical mistakes in malpractice claims: diagnostic error. Patient communications determine patient understanding and perceptions of medical care received and treatment compliance. The important patient perception of care has been addressed by the government in the form of a survey entitled the “Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems.” This practice rating method has been added to the new 2017 MACRA Quality Payment Program (QPP) Merit Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) as a Quality measure.  Patient perception of care which is associated with diagnostic error, medical harm and claims is now being measured for treatment quality and physician payments. This lecture addresses the correlation of patient opinion and quality of care including how failed patient communications and poor patient involvement lead to diagnostic error, medical adverse events and malpractice claims.  Important areas of patient perception in the CAHPS survey will be discussed with recommendations on improving patient communication and involvement. Attendees will be able to implement methods to improve patient involvement and perceptions with better understanding and compliance leading to decreased diagnostic error and reduction of malpractice claims.
